Face Reading: Fortune Telling?

Updated: Jul 13

The True Meaning of Face Reading, Facial Expressions, and Body Language

I am often asked whether Face Reading, Facial Expressions, and Body Language have anything to do with fortune-telling or mind-reading. This common question has prompted me to write this blog article, aiming to bring clarity and promote better understanding.

The ability to read faces has nothing to do with predicting the future or mind-reading. Instead, it is about developing more empathy towards each other and fostering deeper and more benevolent interactions. It's about gaining a deeper understanding of others and recognizing the nonverbal signals that provide clues to their feelings, needs, and moods. By attentively exploring the topics of Face Reading, Facial Expressions, and Body Language, we can enrich our interpersonal relationships and build more empathetic communication. It's not about predicting the future or reading other people's thoughts; rather, it's about approaching each other with greater sensitivity and mindfulness.

Face Reading: The Reflection of Our Personality

I have repeatedly observed that people confuse Face Reading with fortune-telling. However, it is actually about something entirely different. Face Reading, also known as Physiognomy, allows us to recognize the strengths and personality of a person based on their face. It's not about seeing through others or revealing their true thoughts. Instead, it's another channel that helps us develop greater empathy towards others and supports us in identifying their emotional states and personality traits. By reading faces, we can deepen our interpersonal relationships and cultivate a greater appreciation for the uniqueness of each individual.

The Language of Emotions

You have probably noticed yourself: Facial expressions often convey more about someone's feelings than their words. That's why it's important to understand and read facial expressions.

Studies have shown that the average ability to recognize emotions is around 60 percent. This means that we misinterpret or fail to notice every second facial expression. Therefore, reading facial expressions is a matter of:

"Am I living in clarity or still in the fog?"

Reading Facial Expressions is Reading Emotions

Our facial expressions serve as the stage for our emotions and form a universal, cross-cultural language that helps us recognize the feelings of others, thereby understanding what our counterparts truly experience. By being sensitive to even subtle facial expressions, we can empathize better with others' situations and respond more compassionately. This, in turn, leads to more effective communication and a deeper mutual understanding, ultimately reducing misunderstandings. The ability to read the facial expressions of others opens up a new level of interpersonal connection, enabling us to foster genuine empathetic relationships.

Body Language: The Interplay of Movement and Posture

"Our body speaks, whether we intend it to or not."

In addition to facial expressions, we distinguish seven other channels in body language:

  • Head Posture

  • Gestures

  • Foot and Leg Behavior

  • Body Posture

  • Psychophysiology

  • Voice

  • Interpersonal Movement Behavior

"The body always follows the inner attitude."

If you want to authentically improve your nonverbal impact, it's best to start by working on your inner attitude and emotions. Because when you change what's inside, your outward appearance will naturally change too!

Reading Body Language

When we also consider a person's body language, we gain valuable insights into their emotional state and can respond appropriately and respectfully. Taking the time to notice and correctly interpret even subtle nonverbal signals from others demonstrates that we perceive them and take their needs seriously. This creates an atmosphere of trust and openness that allows for deeper connection. Ultimately, it's about recognizing and understanding people as whole individuals, and body language is a crucial part of the communication puzzle in achieving this.

Seeing and Understanding People Holistically

For me, it's always fascinating how much deeper I can connect with others when I consciously incorporate all channels of body language. It allows me to understand the true messages behind the words and better recognize what my fellow human beings are really feeling. This helps me to be more empathetic, react with greater sensitivity, and deepen my relationships on a more profound level. Because when we see people holistically and understand their nonverbal cues, new paths of communication and connection open up.

In a world where human connection is often neglected and our ability to recognize emotions is increasingly diminishing, there is an alarming fact: emotional blindness.

Inability to Perceive and Recognize Emotions

These days, one in ten people consider themselves emotionally blind, meaning they struggle to perceive both their own emotional state and that of others. It's an alarming fact highlighting how many individuals today wrestle with emotional intelligence. However, the ability to recognize emotions and respond appropriately is crucial for our personal well-being and interpersonal relationships. Yet, in such a world, we can make a positive difference by consciously reading the nonverbal signals of others. By better understanding our fellow humans and responding empathetically to their needs, we have the opportunity to foster a culture of empathy and goodwill.

Resonating with Statements of Resonance

Face Reading, facial expressions, and body language are valuable tools to enhance our interpersonal relationships and foster a more empathetic interaction. They enable us to better recognize the emotional states and needs of others and respond empathetically. The key element is to resonate with statements of resonance.

"Hey, I have the feeling that something is troubling you!" could be a resonant statement after noticing signs of sadness in the facial expressions of my counterpart, even though they've told me otherwise. The foundation for decoding and understanding body language is the Mimikresonanz Model of active perception. Unlike passive reception of sensory stimuli, active perception involves consciously and mindfully grasping our surroundings. Developing this ability requires training our senses and our brains, but the good news is that everyone can learn it. We all are face readers. Interestingly, our brain has a specific area dedicated to recognizing faces and facial expressions—the fusiform face area (FFA).

Conclusion

The ability to read faces, recognize facial expressions, and interpret body language can be developed through practice and learning. The more we engage with these skills and consciously pay attention, the better we become at understanding the nonverbal signals of others. It requires attention and sensitivity, but the reward is a deeper connection with our fellow human beings and improved interpersonal communication.

Due to all the reasons explained above, it becomes clear that Face Reading, facial expressions, and body language are not forms of fortune-telling or mind-reading. Rather, they serve as tools to strengthen our empathy and develop a deeper understanding of others.
